Operations within the Madison Research Institute resumed uninterrupted years after its construction (construction finished in 1982); the DMR produced a whopping thirty (30) megawatts per hour, generating energy for the entirety of the state and surrounding states. The facility was globally-recognized as the “home of innovation,” harboring three different lab divisions, harboring the Dark Matter Reactor, and harboring the strongest hadron collider available in 1985. Dr. McCarthy and his colleagues each received Nobel Peace Prizes were their efforts in science and efforts in pushing humanity forward by President Ronald Reagan. The year of 1985 saw the most change, Dr. Kaiser, the woman behind the DMR, was promoted to the regional position of Director of Reactor Operations, her overseeing the Eastern Seaboard’s Quantum-owned nuclear reactor arsenal and particularly the DMR. Dr. Kaiser was a prideful woman, her sight-setting seemingly pushing Quantum’s limits further and further, opening new doors for opportunity. The date is July 24th, 1985, the Quantum Corporation had sent a memo towards all staffers in Reactor Operations notifying them of an opening in the Chief Officers’ Board, the position being Chief Energy Officer, a position that Dr. Kaiser was setting herself up to receive. With Dr. Kaiser’s experience, along with her potent knowledge in nuclear physics, she believed she was the best candidate applying for the position, and she was. Over a vetting period of two weeks, a notice came in saying she was denied, with Dr. Heinz Meyer, a former Nazi Germany nuclear physicist, taking the position as Chief Energy Officer. Dr. Kaiser felt vilified, her official notice from the Quantum Corporation being: From the Quantum Corporation Global Administrative Headquarters, [REDACTED], New York City, New York @ 2:35PM Eastern Standard Time, June 24th, 1985: Dear Dr. Helene Kaiser, The Quantum Corporation humbly appreciates you applying for the position of Chief Energy Officer, we have taken into deep-consideration your contributions to the company and your extensive knowledge in your respective fields, along with the innovation of the DMDD-TICFR, however, upon further vetting, we have concluded that you do not meet the administrative qualifications entailed to the person that holds the seat of Chief Energy Officer. Your behavior, at best, has been flagged as a risk towards the Quantum Corporation, both on a national and international scale, and we have concluded that we cannot take a PR-risk by taking you onboard. Your medical records, particularly from your psychiatrist, have explicitly laid out your incompetency towards this field and your tendency to think emotionally and not logically. As mentioned above, while we respect you for your works, we cannot give you a high-ranking administrative position until you have demonstrated your competence for one. We request that you continue to fulfill your position as regional Director of Reactor Operations, as you have shown your capableness towards the position in the past; we hope that the next time we have an opening that you do qualify, but otherwise, you will remain in your current position. Sincerely, The Quantum Corporation Chief Officers’ Board Dr. Kaiser was speechless, her rage and utter disgust towards this notice was devastating. It was this notice that would ultimately doom the Madison Research Institute; what followed after this notice was a premeditated plan of destruction, to get revenge on her higher-ups for them refusing to see her capabilities. From June 25th and forward, Dr. Kaiser single-handedly, and unbeknownst to all staff within the facility, drafted a plan that called for the complete and utter destruction of the Madison Research Institute, her doomsday being marked as August 18th, 1985. During her time researching the fundamentals of dark matter-doped fusion, she had discovered that one of the three fuel cell receptacles on the Dark Matter Reactor had a major manufacturing flaw, the pressurization system within fuel cell receptacle three did not function at the same efficiency rate as the other two. The pressurization systems within each fuel cell receptacle were solely responsible for separating the inner and outer atmospheres of the Dark Matter Reactor, ensuring the combustion of the materials solely within the combustion chamber, and not with nitrogen and oxygen, oxygen already serving as an oxidizer towards combustion in natural chemical reactions. With Dr. Kaiser having sole control of operations of the Dark Matter Reactor, and its safety systems, she instructed the Chief Engineer to temporarily take-down the safety systems responsible for stalling the reactor’s combustion sequence, called the Dark Matter Reactor Emergency Combustion Stall Protocol (DMRECSP), the entire code sequence later being purged from the system. Despite recommendations and actual operation regulation compelling to shut the Dark Matter Reactor down for maintenance, Dr. Kaiser dismissed concerns regarding active maintenance, saying that she did not want to interrupt commercial power distribution. Her subordinates obliged, operations continued like normal, except with active maintenance being done during the DMR’s on-time. As Dr. Kaiser was one of the lead administrators within the Madison Research Institute, and manipulated her supervisor, Dr. Martin Miller, the Director of MRI operations, into her bidding, she had successfully set in stone her plans for sabotage. Dr. Kaiser ordered for a lockdown drill to take place on the night of August 18th, the reason being, “to prepare for staff preparedness and response in the event of an actual emergency”; lockdown drills entailed the shutting of the Tartarus seal, the primary and only entry zone of MRI, which would prevent the entry or exit of any staff until the lockdown drill was lifted. The drill was scheduled to take place from 10:30PM until 2:00AM the following day, Dr. Kaiser made the excuse that the night shift personnel (of about 230 staffers) were not prepared for emergency situations. Chief Security Officer Kevin Brown would accept her lockdown drill request on August 2nd, confirming the drill for August 18th and preparing the mobilization of Quantum Defense Firm operatives to assist with the drill. With all of her plans falling into place, Dr. Kaiser outlined her escape plan, along with her plan of preventing any sort of communication with the surface. She outlined a new lockdown drill level, called Lockdown Code Bravo-9, that entailed complete radio silence with the surface and all radio communication diodes, a plan that would prevent any communication from Reactor Ops to the surface. The plan was to make it seem that it was accidental so Dr. Kaiser could run off free with vindication. The Dark Matter Reactor was powerful enough to eviscerate a 300-mile radius if all proper containment systems failed and the DMR detonated on the surface; with the DMR being about 3000 meters underground, the total amount of destruction that she calculated was about 50 miles. Dr. Kaiser plotted her minimum safe distance and requested a helicopter transport from MRI to the Quantum Corporation Global Administrative Headquarters in New York City, it being a quick escape from something that entails total annihilation. Days flew by as Dr. Kaiser prepared her ultimate plan, the destruction of the Madison Research Institute. She plotted the day’s agenda, as so nothing would interfere with her escape. She would give free vacation days towards employees she had good relations with, also calling in people she despised for mandatory training for August 18th. Dr. Kaiser finalized her plan on August 12th, setting her countdown clock for August 18th, 1985, specifically for 11:30PM. The date is August 18th, 1985, a charming fall Sunday, kids returning to school after long summer breaks, homeowners preparing their homes for the winter, churchgoers blissfully going to their respective places of worship, and all of the routine preparatory stuff you’d expect on a Sunday. Operations at the Madison Research Institute went routine, as per usual, a routine bi-monthly inspection was cancelled by Dr. Kaiser, requesting that they come back next week as the DMR couldn’t be taken down for maintenance. Imports on supplies resumed, employees came and left as they routinely did, and everything seemed.. normal. Dr. Kaiser had called her last meeting at 7:30PM Eastern Standard Time, calling the Reactor Operations Directorate and notifying them of a mandatory safety test requested by headquarters; the team seemed skeptical, but didn’t question Dr. Kaiser’s motives. As the lockdown drill inched closer hour by hour, the safety test was scheduled and the testing parameters were established. Dr. Kaiser faked an emergency phone call, saying she had to go immediately, leaving the facility at around 10:24PM Eastern Standard Time, six (6) minutes prior to when the lockdown would’ve begun. The safety test entailed simulating core circulation pump failures, the core circulation pumps allowing for the core’s inner-Liquid Helium and Water cycles to maintain a stable combustion chamber temperature. Reactor Operations rung-up Pump Station Alpha, greenlighting the reduction of the coolant pumps by 75%. Power lasers were set to interval level 3, catalyzing the reaction within the combustion chamber as gigawatt output gradually rose. The Tartarus blast door was sealed at 10:30PM, splitting both worlds of the underground research facility, and the world above. Reactor Operations resumed the test, gradually raising core power and reducing thermal systems’ efficiency; the combustion chamber outputting 1800 Kelvin in heat, along with 34 Gigawatts in energy. The test results were above expectations until around 11:23PM Eastern Standard Time; a sensory system within the DMR had suddenly stopped responding, prompting the attempted restart of the system, to no avail. Reactor Operations Deputy Director Dr. Weldman guided the team, going under the assumption that the sensory failure was intended for the safety test. With the error range of reported temperature and pressure started to widen, worries among the Reactor Operations team started to arise, some of the operators suggesting a shutdown due to a faulty system within the DMR. Dr. Weldman dismissed the request, wishing to not disobey Dr. Kaiser, despite also having his own skepticism towards the test. The test resumed, the margin of error range now at an alarming 20%, unbeknownst to the Reactor Operations team. A pressure-reading system within quadrant two (adjacent to fuel cell three’s receptacle) stopped responding, prompting an alarm that blared throughout the control room. Dr. Everhart, junior Reactor Operator and Chief Safety Officer for Reactor Operations, dismissed the alarm, urging for the shutdown of the Dark Matter Reactor and reporting to Dr. Kaiser about sensory issues within the structure. Despite the two system failures, at least two systems out of about two hundred, the test resumed, the team agreeing to shutdown the reactor for the night after the test was concluded. Pressure systems would report lower and lower efficiency, the entire second quadrant’s pressure stabilization system failing as alarms once again blared in the control room. At around 11:46PM Eastern Standard Time, all alarms in the control room went off all at once, emergency systems failing as a pressure leak occurred in quadrant two, fuel cell receptacle three. Pressure and temperature started to skyrocket, cooling systems reporting back at around 5% efficiency as the systems could not keep up with the pressure leak. Reactor Operations rung-up Pump Station Alpha, demanding for the pumps to be raised to maximum power, the pump operators reporting a circulation pump trip within the system. Dr. Klein, senior Reactor Operations engineer, sent a distress signal to the Kaiser Communications Diode, a radio hub that transmitted within the United States, getting blocked by lockdown code Bravo-9. Operators scurried to engage release valves, kill the power lasers, maximize coolant intake, and shutdown the reactor. Reactor operators scoffed as they had discovered the code within the system was deleted, locking the operators out of the opportunity of engaging the reactor’s emergency stall protocol; temperature skyrocketed, a gravitational anomaly forming as the dark matter compressed to form a black hole. Alarms blared, the facility shook, dust fell, reactor operators started fleeing, the horrifying sight of the Dark Matter Reactor glowing red and screeching at the operators. At 11:53PM Eastern Standard Time, the Dark Matter Reactor violently collapsed into itself, the additional matter compressing to grow the size of the blackhole, the entire chamber collapsing in on itself as a blinding light emanated from in the chamber. At 11:54PM Pacific Standard Time, telephone lines got clogged as hundreds of thousands of people started phoning emergency services, all reporting along the lines of a massive explosion, following an “earthquake” and massive shockwave that shattered windows and eardrums alike. Black smoke clouded the night sky, covering the starlight as nuclear war-like sirens started to blare, urging all citizens to evacuate. Chaos ensued, Washington D.C. promptly responding, declaring DEFCON 2 as it was assumed that an attack on American soil had ensued. The National Guard and FBI were deployed to New Haven, Connecticut, global news turning to the attention of the almost nuclear-like explosion near the city of New Haven. All surrounding cities and towns dispatched fire brigades towards the explosion site, geiger-counters clicking as dangerously radioactive steam emitted from the ventilation exhausts from the underground portions of the former Madison Research Institute. Connecticut declared a state emergency and ordered for the complete evacuation of all southern Connecticut residents, particularly New Haven residents. Nobody knew what happened. The news the following morning left the world in complete shock, watching in awe as one of the most fatal catastrophes continuously unfolded as a six-day battle took place to put out the fires and seal up the exhaustion valves, hazmat teams being summoned because of the highly-radioactive particles in the air. The discovery of the Madison Research Institute being destroyed took global news by storm, protests around the country manifested, the Quantum Defense Firm getting overloaded as operatives were scrambled around the country to protect Quantum assets. Dr. McCarthy and his remaining staffers ducked under the public eye, scrambling to find out what happened and who was responsible. On August 20th, a broadcast was received by the late-Madison Research Institute, it was a distress signal that was held between two relays for storage; the message was a distress code with the logs of the DMR, going from August 18th, 1985 11:00PM Eastern Standard Time to 11:54PM Eastern Standard Time of that same night. Congress and multiple investigatory committees convened to subpoena Dr. McCarthy and his lead scientists to testify before Congress, Dr. Kaiser was summoned as one of the primary subjects of interest, but she was nowhere to be found. Within the HiComm Quantum Administration, QDF Intelligence Officers tracked down Dr. Kaiser; Benjamin Johnson, former Maintenance Director of MRI, ordering the assassination of Dr. Kaiser for her negligence and absolute disloyalty towards the Quantum Corporation. Top Epsilon-8 officials sided with Mr. Johnson, believing that keeping all information regarding Epsilon-8 a secret was paramount. Dr. Kaiser was found at the bottom of a cliff, her car obliterated from the fall, it was discovered that her brakes had failed due to some sort of tampering. The testimony was scheduled for March 14th, 1986, an emergency session that quickly convened to address the incident that occurred on August 18th, 1985. Amid the public chaos, Quantum’s public reputation and profits stagnated, before crashing. Stockholders rapidly sold their shares of the Quantum Corporation as stock prices plummeted, the unfolding catastrophe more-and-more losing the confidence of the public within the company. The entire staff hierarchy was overhauled, new leadership, new R&D, new everything, in hopes to restore public confidence. Decades of research were expunged or relocated to a classified Epsilon-8 installment deep within the Siberian forest in Russia; records regarding all experiments, subjects, and materials were expunged, the Quantum Corporation fearing the worst towards their status as the lead research firm. The remaining three decades of the Quantum Corporation saw utter stagnation, as public confidence was never regained under the McCarthy Administration; many uttered rumors of voting James McCarthy out, but those who tried, disappeared. It was the end of expansion of the Quantum Corporation under James McCarthy.
